Music artists unlock the Residency property
We’ve all seen the stories where rock stars take over luxury hotels, but The Residency is doing something far more revolutionary: turning that transactional idea into a holistic, immersive creative experience.
This unique program, developed by entrepreneur and former professional basketball player Marcus Damas in partnership with the brand and experience company Fueled by Culture, invites chart-topping artists to temporarily inhabit distinct properties across the United States. The musician at the helm doesn’t just play; they curate the entire guest experience, crafting the soundtrack, designing the food and beverage menus, and arranging one-of-a-kind onsite performances that transform a weekend into an all-access adventure.
The magic lies in the collaboration. The framework for The Residency was born from fusing the world of hospitality with talent management. It leverages the idea that creativity and luxury can amplify each other. Instead of simply booking a performance, artists gain a powerful new platform to create, while properties gain an unparalleled association and revenue stream.
The result is an intersection where hospitality meets high art. It’s a model that takes inspiration from concepts like a Vegas residency, but adapts it by focusing on the deeper influence of the creative within the space. It positions the property not just as a venue, but as a canvas for unparalleled creative expression.
The inaugural chapter of this innovative series took place at Gurney’s Montauk Resort & Seawater Spa, a beautiful beachside property in the Hamptons. Wyclef Jean was brought in to transform the location, blending the coastal landscape with an artistic vision. For the experience, the collaboration was seamless and deeply personal.
The event unfolded as a full immersion: an invite-only dinner focused on fresh seafood suited to Jean’s Haitian roots, a beach party with playlists meticulously curated by Jean’s own DJs, and an intimate performance at the Firepit lounge. Guests enjoyed the property as much as the performance, feeling the creative energy in every room.
As Jean reflected on the partnership, he summed up the shift: “I’ve played every kind of stage there is. Nobody had ever offered me a property. This wasn’t a booking, it was a composition, and Gurney’s was the instrument.”
The property owners echoed this sentiment. Michael Nenner, president and chief operating officer of Gurney’s Resorts, noted that this residency was different. “For one weekend the property itself became the work, and our guests felt it in every room they walked through. That doesn’t leave when the weekend ends.”
The collaboration works by pooling ideas and allowing the artist total creative control, from the menu to the ambiance. The process involves working subject by subject, ensuring the final experience is tailored and unique. This approach allows properties to easily integrate creative elements, such as food and beverage offerings, into the guest experience, providing a turnkey opportunity.
Ultimately, the goal of The Residency is to leave guests feeling truly appreciated and one-of-one, ensuring they receive an experience they want to pay for, not one that feels merely up-charged. For the artists and creatives involved, the residency provides a valuable platform to explore the intersection of art and business, opening doors for incredible new creative outlets.
As the program moves forward, the founders are already eyeing new properties and creatives, promising that the next chapter of The Residency will continue to raise eyebrows.
