A high-stakes legal battle is unfolding in California as musician Alanis Morissette has filed a lawsuit against her former tour manager, Keren Urinov, accusing her of a calculated campaign of blackmail and extortion related to airport trafficking and drug charges.
The filing, made recently in a federal court, paints a dramatic picture of a professional relationship spiraling into criminal accusations. Morissette alleges that Urinov attempted to pressure her into signing a lengthy contract, leveraging serious legal issues to achieve her demands.
At the heart of the dispute are grave allegations concerning drug trafficking. Morissette claims that Urinov attempted to blackmail her by referencing drug charges and involving her in smuggling incidents during international travel. The suit details claims that during a trip to Spain in 2025, Urinov allegedly disclosed details about a bag containing marijuana and xylazine, an animal tranquilizer, to border authorities.
The filing further alleges that Urinov told Morissette that she had a history of legal trouble, including being detained in Latin America after allegedly smuggling drugs in a surfboard. This narrative, Morissette contends, was used as leverage in the ongoing extortion scheme.
Beyond the drug allegations, the lawsuit outlines demands for substantial financial compensation. Urinov reportedly sent “increasingly extortionate letters,” threatening to expose Morissette to UK police unless she agreed to a 15-year management contract. The claims indicate that Urinov also sought annual raises, bonuses, and access to a US attorney, further escalating the demands placed upon Morissette.
The lawsuit suggests that the claims extended beyond the professional relationship. Morissette’s filing stated that the ex-manager was not only a blackmailer but was also responsible for mismanagement, including an alleged mistake in booking a hotel room that cost her $70,000.
Morissette is seeking a jury trial, pushing for the ex-manager to pay back $75,000 in damages alongside a fine. Despite the gravity of the claims, Urinov has not issued a public response to the lawsuit.
While this legal battle takes center stage, Morissette continues her professional trajectory, with her 2026 tour dates scheduled to continue, including performances at Riot Fest in Chicago and headline shows at the YouTube Theater in Los Angeles.
