Morello, Garbage, Grohl honor L7’s Jennifer Finch

The music world is reeling from the loss of a true force, Jennifer Finch, the bassist and vocalist for the iconic band L7. Following her passing this past Saturday, the outpouring of respect and remembrance from musicians across the spectrum has been nothing short of seismic.

Finch fought an aggressive battle with brain cancer, which took a toll on her life, but her impact on the world of music was, as one representative stated, “seismic; her impact on our lives, even more so.”

While the family sought private space to grieve during this difficult time, the community responded immediately with tributes celebrating her vibrant spirit and unforgettable presence. L7 bandmates Suzi Gardner, Donita Sparks, and Dee Plakas shared heartfelt remembrances, recalling her as a “beloved bandmate, friend, and fellow troublemaker.”

The legacy Finch left behind is deeply intertwined with the sound of early nineties alternative rock. As a core member of L7, her bass work was instrumental in driving the group’s 1992 breakthrough album, Bricks Are Heavy. This record, produced by Butch Vig, propelled L7 from the Los Angeles punk underground into the wider alternative-rock moment of the era, defined by heavy riffs, blunt humor, and political bite.

Beyond her time in L7, Finch explored other creative avenues, working as a photographer, writer, and visual artist, demonstrating a breadth of talent that enriched her life beyond music.

The tributes from musical peers cemented Finch’s place among rock royalty. Tom Morello, guitarist for Rage Against the Machine, remembered her as “an important fixture of the LA scene, a super cool person, a true artist with a kind and welcoming heart,” acknowledging her as both a powerful artist and a gracious friend.

Other luminaries joined in honoring her memory. Garbage offered a brief message: “Godspeed beautiful Jennifer. Thank you.” Violet Grohl called her a “force,” noting that she “made so many feel so seen.” Even Michael Stipe of R.E.M. shared a simple but profound tribute, wishing her peace.
