Modest Mouse guitarist responds to messages to a minor
The digital landscape often serves as an unfiltered stage for public drama, and recently, an online exchange involving guitarist Simon O’Connor of Modest Mouse brought such a situation into sharp focus. A fan posted screenshots on Reddit, alleging that O’Connor had sent inappropriate direct messages to a minor.
The screenshots circulated widely, depicting what appeared to be sexually explicit memes and suggestive comments referencing the fan’s personal photos. The exchange involved some highly sensitive content, including references to a photo countdown tied to a birthday.
In response to the allegations, O’Connor posted his own statement on Reddit, offering an explanation that complicated the narrative. He claimed he had mistakenly engaged with an account belonging to someone he previously dealt with—a profile known for creating and deleting multiple social media accounts in an attempt to engage him.
O’Connor explained that under this mistaken assumption, he sent a tasteless meme and a suggestive message. He admitted that after a few minutes, he realized his error: the person he had messaged was not the one he thought he was interacting with. Consequently, he unsent the messages and immediately ceased communication.
The musician took full responsibility for the misstep, expressing genuine regret to the person who received those messages. He acknowledged that while he assumed he was dealing with a known harasser, his actions were based on poor judgment and a significant mistake.
In his statement, O’Connor unequivocally stated that he opposes any sexual behavior toward minors. He emphasized that regardless of intent or assumption, he understands the gravity of the situation and is sorry for the stress and attention this misunderstanding has caused.
He concluded by noting that while he cannot change what occurred, his priority is to tell the truth, take responsibility for his error, and offer an apology.
