Mobile Becomes Jimmy Buffett’s Gulf Coast Home
The spirit of the open road and the Gulf Coast coastline is taking center stage in Mobile, Alabama, as a monumental tribute to Jimmy Buffett is set to unfold. The National Maritime Museum of the Gulf is hosting the Jimmy Buffett: Son of a Son of a Sailor Experience, an immersive installation that promises to transport visitors into the vibrant world of a musician who lived as much by the sea as he did by the music.
Spanning six thousand square feet, this experience is far more than a traditional museum exhibit. It is a treasure trove, gathering over 130 artifacts that pull back the curtain on Buffett’s life and career, including many items that have never been publicly displayed. Visitors will encounter iconic pieces like Buffett’s 2023 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame statue, his treasured 12-string Martin guitar, handwritten lyrics, personal photographs, and never-before-released concert and recording footage.
The installation aims to capture the full, multifaceted story of Jimmy Buffett—not just that of a beloved musician, but of a sailor, pilot, author, entrepreneur, adventurer, philanthropist, and storyteller. The experience meticulously recreates memories, including the sounds of Shrimp Boat Sound, Buffett’s Key West recording studio, and intimate interviews with family, bandmates, crew, friends, and business associates. It is a living exhibit designed to evolve as new stories emerge.
The choice of location in Mobile is particularly resonant. Buffett grew up in the city, steeped in the maritime culture that defined his upbringing. The museum itself sits on the waterfront, a fitting backdrop given the deep ties between the family and the region’s rich history of shipbuilding and seafaring.
The celebration kicks off on September 11 with a memorable evening of “Margaritas and Memories,” featuring longtime Coral Reefer band members Mac McAnally and Scotty Emerick at Mobile’s Saenger Theater. The grand opening on September 12 will bring the installation to life, featuring the unveiling of a larger-than-life bronze Buffett sculpture, live music, and a nautical-themed mural festival at Cooper Riverside Park.
This tribute arrives at a poignant time, coinciding with the third anniversary of Buffett’s passing. Meanwhile, the story of the musicians who shaped his sound for decades is also being explored in the upcoming Jeff Bridges-narrated documentary Occupational Hazard”>Occupational Hazard, which delves into the history of the Coral Reefer band.
