MindFree transforms genre chaos into wizard rock
In a world that demands bands pick a lane, the Los Angeles trio MindFree has boldly decided to treat melody not as a roadmap, but as gravity—holding together a sound that is simultaneously built to shock and comfort.
Genre labels often feel like handcuffs for working musicians. Streaming algorithms and festival lineups reward artists who fit neatly into a single box, pushing bands to narrow their sound. But for MindFree, the tension between style and substance is the entire point. Formed in 2018 by guitarist and lead vocalist Mark Anthony Abbruzzese, MindFree’s dynamic trio—alongside drummer Ric Rosario and bassist/keyboardist Curtis Ortega—employs incredible flexibility. They don’t adhere to a rigid formula; rather, each piece is defined by its unique mood, allowing diverse influences to come forward naturally. Their catalog reflects this expansive vision. Albums like MindFree (2021) and StarDust (2024) showcase the breadth of their range. While StarDust leans into vibrant psychedelic and funk textures, tracks like “Navigation” pull in heavier metal and pop sensibilities. This sonic agility is powered by layered vocals, adaptable guitar tones, analog pedals, heavy bass, and atmospheric keyboards, giving every song the space it needs to inhabit whatever mood it desires.
Abbruzzese’s guitar sound is meticulously crafted, shaped by Black Volt Amplification tube amplifiers and custom guitars, drawing inspiration from artists like Pharaoh Howell. Even their cover songs—inspired by artists like Stevie Wonder and Thin Lizzy—find a natural home within the MindFree musical world, proving that context is more important than strict genre boundaries.
For MindFree, musical range isn’t a challenge to be overcome; it’s a way to express the full spectrum of the human experience. The shifting moods within a single song can move from comforting to unsettling without ever feeling jarring, offering listeners a rich, nuanced emotional journey.

Their appeal has been recognized by industry figures; in 2025, the band made it to the final 20 in America’s Next Top Hitmaker Contest, featuring Alice Cooper on the judging panel, and they have consistently been ranked as Broadjam’s top band or artist in the Indie Rock category.
