Matt Lucas debunks Little Britain reboot rumours

Matt Lucas has firmly shut down recent speculation about a reboot of his iconic sketch show, Little Britain, addressing rumors circulating on social media.

The comedian, who shared the spotlight on the BBC Three sketch show alongside David Walliams between 2003 and 2006, denied any plans for a revival of the series. This clarification came amid reports suggesting that Little Britain might be poised for a return, potentially landing on a streaming service rather than returning to the BBC.

This denial comes against a backdrop of the show’s complex history. Little Britain has certainly stirred controversy over the years, notably leading to its removal from BBC iPlayer in 2020 following the removal of certain sketches deemed culturally insensitive.

The aftermath of these controversies saw Lucas and Walliams publicly acknowledge their past actions. Both comedians spoke out about their regret regarding playing characters of other races, offering apologies for the impact their portrayals had.

The series did eventually find its way back to the iPlayer platform in 2022, but this return came with significant changes. The broadcaster re-added the show with edits aimed at better reflecting the changes in the cultural landscape over the two decades since its debut.

The history of the show is also marked by specific public moments. Last year, Lucas offered a public apology to Millie Bobby Brown following a comment made about her appearance, where he clarified the context of his reference to his character, Vicky Pollard. He acknowledged the resemblance and apologized for any offense caused by the comparison.

Despite the continuous stream of public discussions and speculation, Lucas remains resolute in his position: there are no plans to reboot Little Britain. The story of the show, therefore, continues to focus on its enduring legacy and the public’s evolving perspective on its history.
