The moment itself was pure magic. U2 guitarist The Edge surprised festival-goers by joining Garrix onstage, adding an electrifying layer to the performance. It was a perfect encapsulation of the artistic chemistry that has simmered between these legendary figures for years.

While Garrix and Bono and The Edge have previously collaborated—including on the 2021 UEFA anthem “We Are the People” and producing tracks like “Scars”—“Fireflies” marks a significant milestone: it is Garrix’s first collaboration with the complete band U2. Garrix described the process as surreal and electrifying, noting that finally debuting the song at Tomorrowland with The Edge allowed him to glimpse the unique chemistry of the entire group.

“We go back a long way with Martin, and there’s always a sense of adventure whenever we get together,” commented The Edge. He added that playing the song for the first time in front of such an enthusiastic crowd reminded him why he loves being outdoors, finding joy when there is no ceiling.

As U2 simultaneously ramps up its creative output, “Fireflies” arrives as the band prepares for their next album campaign. Their lead single “Street of Dreams” was released earlier this month, accompanied by a music video filmed in Mexico City. The upcoming album follows recent companion EPs, Days of Ash and Easter Lily, which provided a preview of the band’s latest creative chapter and marked the return of drummer Larry Mullen Jr. to the studio lineup.
