Magdalena Bay’s ‘Imaginal Disk’ Visual Album screens in Toronto

Music and visual art are merging in a stunning new way, as Magdalena Bay transforms their beloved online-music-guy-favourite, Imaginal Disk, into a full-fledged visual album. This immersive multimedia experience is set to land in Toronto next month, promising a psychedelic and deeply introspective journey for audiences.

The project is a vibrant exploration of the themes of individuality and sentience, weaving together centuries of human feeling through striking visual experimentation. At the heart of the narrative is the character True, an album surrogate whose very body rebels against pre-programming, offering a rich, layered commentary on existence.

The visual narrative is brought to life by director Amanda Kramer, whose affectionate kitsch style perfectly complements the album’s psychedelic introspection. The resulting visual work is a masterclass in color and creative freedom, positioning it as a piece of pure pop excellence.

The full visual album will be shown by Hot Docs Ted Rogers Cinema next Friday, November 6. The film runs for 59 minutes, offering a concentrated dose of this unique artistic vision.

The event is part of Hot Docs’ ongoing Truth and Dare series, positioning the screening as an event rich with cultural context. Before the main feature, attendees will have the opportunity to experience the Toronto premiere of Skeptics and Believers, a compelling short film from local comedy group the Big Three, which will be presented live.

Fans will also have the chance to engage directly with the creators, as Amanda Kramer will be on hand for a Q&A following the screening. Tickets for this event are available now.
