The anticipation for the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards is already reaching fever pitch, setting the stage for one of the most hotly contested award seasons in recent memory. This year promises an epic showdown between musical titans, with artists battling it out for the coveted trophies, and setting the stage for potential all-time record-breaking achievements.
At the forefront of the race are two reigning forces: Madonna and Taylor Swift. Madonna has amassed an impressive 11 nominations across various categories, including Video of the Year, Artist of the Year, and Song of the Year, alongside nominations for technical achievements like Best Collaboration, Direction, and Cinematography. If her momentum continues, she could potentially tie Beyoncé and Swift for the all-time record in VMA wins.
Meanwhile, Taylor Swift is equally poised, securing nine nominations, including Video and Artist of the Year. Her incredible tally of 30 competitive Moon Person awards means that even a single victory could cement her status as the most-awarded artist in music history.
The competition extends far beyond these heavyweights. The nomination landscape is wide and deep, featuring a crowded field of incredible talent. Ariana Grande and Sabrina Carpenter each have seven nominations, while Bruno Mars, PinkPantheress, and Zara Larsson trail behind with five nominations. Other notable contenders include BLACKPINK member LISA with four nods, and Shakira and Tate McRae with three each.
The fight for the ultimate prizes, however, is truly epic. The Video of the Year category pits some of the most iconic tracks against each other, featuring songs like Grande’s “hate that i made you love me,” Mars’ “I Just Might,” and Madonna’s “Confessions II – The Film,” all vying for top billing. Similarly, the Artist of the Year race brings together a powerhouse group, including Grande, Mars, Madonna, Morgan Wallen, Carpenter, and Swift.
Beyond the main categories, the nominations signal a vibrant generational shift in music. Twenty-six artists are first-time nominees, including exciting newcomers like GENER8ION and Yung Lean, who each have received three nods. K pop stars like CORTIS also earn recognition with two nominations, alongside other emerging talents such as Don Toliver, Kali Uchis, Noah Kahan, and Stella Lefty.
There is also a welcome revival in the technical categories, with Best Dance returning for the first time in seven years, bringing forward nominees like Harry Styles, Lady Gaga & Doechii, Madonna, PinkPantheress, and McRae.
