Madonna and Daughter Lola Leon Discuss ‘Confessions II’ Collab ‘The Test’: ‘A Very Magical Moment’

The magic of music often lies in the unspoken, and recently, superstar Madonna and her daughter Lola Leon opened up about how they found that truth while crafting one of their most meaningful collaborations: the song The Test from her album Confessions II.

During an exclusive conversation with Bob the Drag Queen on “iHeartRadio and TikTok LIVE Premiere With Madonna,” the mother-daughter duo shared the deeply emotional journey behind creating the track. It wasn’t just about music; it was about navigating the complex, unspoken emotions inherent in a powerful maternal relationship.

When asked about the creation of The Test—a piece that marks Madonna’s first official musical team-up with her 29-year-old daughter—Leon responded that the idea originated with her. “There’s a lot of things that are unspoken” in a mother-daughter relationship, she explained. “A way that I thought would be easier for us to speak about these things would be maybe through art, which is always something that my mom and I have connected over. That’s really brought us together.”

Madonna described the songwriting process as a “very magical moment,” emphasizing the need for both of them to be vulnerable. This shared vulnerability allowed them to delve into feelings that are often too difficult to put into words.

The Test” itself became a reflection point for Madonna, exploring the impact of her global fame on Leon. The lyrics speak to feelings of pain and observation, asking: “You didn’t ask for all the flashing lights… I wish I knew the pain I’ve caused.”

Leon also shared a profoundly moving experience that preceded recording the song. Before entering the studio, she had a dream about her maternal grandmother. While unclear in detail, this dream filled her with a powerful sense of presence, prompting reflection on what kind of person she would be and what their relationship would look like. She felt this dream was a beautiful way to honor her and heal each other.

The creative partnership was further infused with personal depth. This connection complements the public presentation of Confessions II, Madonna’s 15th studio album, which features 16 tracks and collaborations with major figures like Sabrina Carpenter, Feid, Martin Garrix, and Stromae.

Ahead of the album’s Friday release, Madonna utilized her platform, partnering with iHeartRadio and TikTok for an exclusive livestream preview. This event offered fans a first listen to the new material one day before it officially dropped, setting the stage for the excitement surrounding this deeply personal and musically rich chapter.
