Madonna and Charli XCX Hit the Dancefloor
The air crackled with mutual admiration, and eventually, that admiration found its rhythm in the studio. Pop provocateurs Madonna and Charli xcx have joined forces to craft a new track, Danceteria Afterhours, a collaboration that channels the fearless influences that have shaped both artists’ careers.
This latest musical venture is inspired by Madonna’s iconic Confessions II track, “Danceteria.” The song was produced by longtime collaborator Stuart Price, blending Madonna’s foundational dance music sensibility with Charli’s boundary-pushing approach to pop. It is a perfect sonic marriage of two artists who clearly share a deep appreciation for the art of rhythm.
The creative spark behind the collaboration stems from more than just musical synergy. The pairing follows a string of public exchanges and shared moments, including a high-profile party with Saint Laurent during Paris Fashion Week and playful social media interactions that captivated fans. This shared energy translated seamlessly into the music, creating a track that feels both nostalgic and utterly contemporary.
Charli xcx herself described the friendship as truly inspiring. During a conversation in June, she reflected on her time with Madonna, noting that hanging out with her and discussing the music she makes—and the reasons behind it—was deeply enriching. “We went to Paris and we just couldn’t stop hanging out with each other,” she shared, emphasizing the inspiring nature of their connection.
The resulting single, “Danceteria Afterhours,” is set to arrive on Thursday, September 24, released via Warner Records. Fans will have several ways to experience this new creation, including three limited-edition CD configurations.
The release timing is particularly exciting, as the track emerges just days before Madonna prepares for her return to the MTV Video Music Awards. Madonna will open the ceremony with her first performance in 23 years, marking her fifth VMA appearance and leading the field with a career-high 13 nominations.
While the music was finding its momentum, Charli xcx was also on the road, supporting the album Music, Fashion, Film. She has successfully played the first three shows on the North American arena leg of her tour and is scheduled to return to the stage tonight in Toronto.
