Macklemore faces petition to leave Ed Sheeran tour
The world of music often intersects with the world of politics, and sometimes the intersection gets loud. Recently, that intersection became a focal point for the Grammy-winning rapper Macklemore, who drew significant attention for his onstage remarks during a major concert.
While performing for Ed Sheeran at New Jersey’s MetLife Stadium on September 4, Macklemore took a moment to address a broader cause, delivering a public plea to “Free Palestine.” This moment, which became a flashpoint for public and political debate, involved not only a simple demand but also a powerful reflection on his own feelings regarding global conflict.
As part of his performance, he also shared his protest song “Hind’s Hall,” a track that had previously sparked discussions about the Israel-Hamas war. In his reflections, Macklemore spoke about the deep desire to stand on that massive stage and offer words that were close to his heart, emphasizing the need for peace and safety for all people.

However, this powerful expression immediately triggered a reaction from advocacy groups. The Israeli-American Council (IAC), an organization representing over 150,000 Israeli Americans, swiftly acted by launching a petition calling for Macklemore to be removed from the remainder of Ed Sheeran’s tour dates.
The organization argued that while artistic freedom is paramount, the use of a global concert platform should not be used to advance what they perceive as a one-sided political agenda. They stressed that the messaging, which they felt relied on selective imagery and disputed claims without sufficient context, was troubling to a massive audience.
The call put forth by the IAC was for tour leadership to clarify whether Macklemore’s political speech, visual content, and the performance of “Hind’s Hall” had received prior approval, and to establish clear boundaries for using the stage for political messaging.
Macklemore has long been vocal in his support for Palestinians amid the ongoing conflict. His decision to perform and speak out on this issue adds another layer to the conversation about how artists navigate complex international political landscapes while seeking to connect with their audience.
