Lowden on Bond age: “We’ve talked about it loads”

The hunt for the next 007 is officially underway, but as the casting process heats up, one name keeps sparking a debate: Jack Lowden. The actor, known for his work in Apple TV spy shows, is vying for the iconic role alongside rising stars like Jacob Elordi and Callum Turner, yet some insiders are questioning if he fits the mold of the suave secret agent.

The speculation is fueled by fellow castmates. Nick Mohammed, who co-stars with Lowden in the series Slow Horses , suggested that while the interest is high, there might be reservations about Lowden’s age for the franchise. Mohammed hinted that rumors have circulated suggesting that franchise owners might be looking for someone in their late twenties rather than their thirties.

This doubt is not new, however. The scrutiny has been intense, particularly from those who understand the history of the role. James Bond author Charlie Higson publicly dismissed the possibility of Lowden taking on the mantle, pointing out that while he liked the actor, he felt he lacked the necessary physical presence. Higson noted that convincing Bond actors need to demonstrate a specific kind of hand-to-hand fighting credibility that he felt Lowden did not possess when compared to Daniel Craig.

The stakes are incredibly high for the new adventure. The search for the successor to Daniel Craig is being overseen by Amazon MGM studios, with the casting process officially announced to have begun in May. This upcoming film is set to be helmed by the visionary director and written by the creator of Peaky Blinders , Steven Knight.

The anticipation surrounding the new Bond movie is further heightened by the potential for record-breaking gaps between installments. If the film is released after February 2028, it will set a new benchmark for the longest pause between Bond adventures.

Despite the industry buzz and the ongoing search, the ultimate choice remains elusive. As the casting process continues, the question remains whether Lowden can successfully navigate the transition from espionage drama to the world of James Bond, proving he has the necessary grit to face the dangers of 007.
