Legendary Bowie concert stage as a global immersive experience
In a monumental effort to unlock a forgotten piece of musical history, a massive, unseen concert from 1978 is being reborn as a global immersive experience. This spectacular vision of David Bowie’s performance, titled ‘Stage,’ is slated to hit arenas in 2027, blending raw archival footage with cutting-edge technology.
The project is a profound collaboration, brought to life through the partnership of the David Bowie Estate, Wonderworld, and filmmaker Brett Morgen. Their mission is to transform raw, previously unseen 35mm film—capturing Bowie’s show at London’s Earls Court in 1978—into a living, breathing artistic event.
This new spectacle is designed to blur the lines between a concert film and a live performance, paying homage to Bowie’s iconic ‘Heroes’ album era. The assembly of the footage is interwoven with dynamic elements, including a lightshow crafted by Patrick Woodroffe, whose work has influenced legends like The Rolling Stones and Elton John, and an immersive audio mix masterminded by Academy Award winner Paul Massey.
The final experience will utilize full-range immersive audio mapping and a full range of transparent LED screens, creating the stunning illusion that Bowie and his band are physically present on stage for a new generation of fans.
The journey of the footage itself is as compelling as the final product. The original ‘Stage’ show remains untouched in the Bowie archives, a treasure preserved for almost fifty years. When the vision emerged ten years ago, it was a deliberate act of rediscovery, spearheaded by Morgen’s work on the documentary Moonage Daydream.
The scale of this historical rediscovery fuels a larger celebration surrounding the late music icon. The event is tied into a wider series of activities, including the ‘Bowie 80’ celebrations, designed to mark his milestone birthday in 2027 with global releases, collaborations, and special events.
The anticipation for the world premiere is palpable. ‘Stage’ will debut on February 14, 2027, at Berlin’s Uber Arena, in association with the 77th Berlin Film Festival. This live experience is set to bring the legendary energy of the past into the future, proving that some of the greatest artistic treasures deserve to be made accessible to everyone.
