Layoffs hit Universal Music Canada departments
The music industry is constantly evolving, and even the behemoths of global entertainment must sometimes make strategic adjustments. Recently, Universal Music Canada (UMC) has navigated a period of necessary restructuring, resulting in significant workforce changes across the organization.
The adjustments involve the elimination of more than 12 positions from the company’s approximately 205 employees, representing a reduction of 6–7 percent of the total workforce. These decisions were formally announced during a town hall meeting held on September 29.
Headquartered in Toronto, UMC operates as a wholly owned subsidiary of the larger Universal Music Group (UMG), extending its operations through offices in Montreal, Vancouver, and Calgary. These restructuring efforts touched multiple areas of the organization, signaling a focus on streamlining operations and optimizing future growth.
The positions affected spanned several key functions, including communications, A&R, marketing, label partnerships, and administration. The goal of these changes was clearly defined as cost-cutting and comprehensive restructuring designed to sharpen the company’s focus.
Crucially, the changes were not limited to entry-level roles. Senior positions were also impacted, with the layoffs affecting at least one employee holding a vice president title and another holding a senior manager title.
These moves underscore the ongoing challenge for major entertainment entities to balance ambitious creative goals with the practical realities of fiscal responsibility. As UMC looks ahead, the focus will undoubtedly be on building a more agile and efficient structure capable of dominating the dynamic global music landscape.
