Lankum’s Radie Peat releases new single The Moon and Stars
Radie Peat, the vocalist known for her work with Lankum, is embarking on a deeply personal musical journey with the announcement of her debut solo album, No Human Tongue Can Tell. This forthcoming record is set to be accompanied by the haunting new single, The Moon and Stars, promising an exploration of history, pain, and profound experience.
The new single immediately captures attention by rewriting traditional folk lyrics to channel raw emotion. Peat has revealed that the songwriting process delves into deeply personal and historically charged themes. For instance, in The Moon and Stars, she incorporated coded references to sensitive experiences, including unwanted pregnancies, abortions, and the use of rue, a herb historically linked to miscarriage. Peat explained that this approach was designed to represent these experiences from the woman’s perspective, connecting listeners directly with these lived realities.
The album itself is described as a communication of hundreds of years of collective experience, woven into the songs from previous generations. Peat envisions the music as binding listeners to a worldliness that extends beyond individual experience. This monumental project was not rushed; she noted that the creative process had been ticking along in the background of her mind for approximately fifteen years.
Peat drew inspiration from artistic movements that push against limitations. She recalled watching documentaries about artists like Mike Oldfield and the creation of pieces like Tubular Bells, sparking an interest in recording music that allowed for intersecting ideas and the exploration of blind spots inherent in the mind and abilities.
The lyrical landscape of the album is rich with themes of female struggle, suffering, strength, and endurance, alongside complex explorations of love and its inevitable complications. Tracks such as Still I Love Him, alongside other pieces like Hares on the Mountain and Willow Garden, showcase this profound emotional depth.
The complete tracklist for No Human Tongue Can Tell includes nine tracks, ranging from Hares on the Mountain and The Moon and Stars to Dark Hore on The Wind.
The debut solo album is scheduled for release on November 13 via Rough Trade Records. Radie Peat will soon be bringing this powerful sound to audiences across the UK, Ireland, and Europe, with announced dates including shows in London, Dublin, Amsterdam, and Paris in 2027.
