Kojima hits back at Physint rumours: take them with scepticism

When a creative powerhouse like Hideo Kojima steps away from a massive project, the resulting silence often fuels a firestorm of speculation. This is exactly what happened when Kojima Productions stepped back from the development of Physint, an ambitious action-espionage game that had been on the horizon for years.

The project, which was first announced in 2024 and slated for a 2030 launch, was a major collaboration rooted in the universe of Metal Gear and Death Stranding. The shift in publishing partners—from PlayStation to Xbox—sparked intense rumors about the reasons behind the cancellation, leading many to speculate about commercial performance and production hurdles.

Journalists hinted that the decision was linked to the commercial success of the Death Stranding franchise and reported issues with budgeting and missed deadlines on Physint. These claims fueled the narrative that a major industry pivot had occurred, forcing a change in creative direction.

In response to these swirling theories, Kojima Productions chose to address the noise directly, offering a measured statement that sought to manage the public narrative while protecting its creative process. The studio cautioned that unsubstantiated speculation regarding their relationship with PlayStation and the project’s internal workings should be met with skepticism.

Hideo Kojima himself expressed feeling “shocked” by PlayStation’s decision to pull funding for the project, admitting he worried about the future of Kojima Productions. Despite the disappointment, he maintained a positive outlook, acknowledging that the current climate in the gaming industry is undeniably tough.

Yet, even as the project was shelved, the creative engine did not stop running. Kojima revealed that he continued to work on the core pillars of Physint, focusing on the world-building, the game system, the visuals, and the design, even without a definitive game engine or publisher in place.

Before the pivot to Physint, Kojima Productions had also released the anthology horror game OD, demonstrating an early focus on creating intensely atmospheric, single-player experiences. The story of Physint cancellation is more than just a failed project; it is a compelling example of how external pressures can reshape ambitious creative visions, leaving behind a legacy of unanswered questions about the intersection of art, commerce, and industry.
