Kid Cudi Helming Basquiat Art Film

In a move that blends music, acting, and history, rapper and actor Kid Cudi is taking a deep dive into the life of a legendary figure, promising to craft a cinematic tribute to the iconic artist Jean-Michel Basquiat.

Cudi is not just observing history; he is aiming to be a central character in it. The artist announced today that he will be writing, directing, and starring in a feature film about Basquiat, with production slated to begin in 2027. This ambitious project represents a long-held dream, transforming a historical figure into a personal narrative.

The journey to this endeavor is steeped in genuine reverence. Cudi revealed that the inspiration for the film came from years of research, engaging with books, and speaking with those who knew the artist. For him, the endeavor is framed as a “love letter to Jean, the ’80s and NY city,” seeking to tell Basquiat’s story in a new light.

Long before embarking on this cinematic quest, Cudi has already carved out an impressive trajectory across various media. His acting credits span indie dramas like James White and Meadowland, alongside appearances in the HBO series We Are Who We Are. His broader filmography also includes roles in projects like Don’t Look Up and Silent Night, demonstrating a commitment to storytelling behind the camera.

This artistic ambition is further fueled by Cudi’s successful blending of musical and visual arts. He co-created and starred in the animated Netflix project Entergalactic (2022), which accompanied an album of the same name, and has taken executive producer roles on other projects such as X and Pearl.

Basquiat himself, who tragically died of a heroin overdose in 1988 at the age of 27, was previously portrayed on screen by Jeffrey Wright in Julian Schnabel’s 1996 film Basquiat. There is also ongoing interest in other cinematic explorations of the artist, such as the documentary King Pleasure, which plans to utilize archival materials to delve into the artist’s life.

Cudi, born Scott Mescudi, has always drawn inspiration from Basquiat throughout his career, making this project a deeply personal undertaking. He expressed excitement about the chance to give this untold story a unique cinematic voice, noting that he hopes this work resonates with dreamers everywhere.
