Kacey Musgraves expands her Middle sound

Kacey Musgraves Extends ‘Middle’ With New Album

Kacey Musgraves is continuing her journey into the heart of the borderlands, releasing a rich new collection that celebrates the deep musical and cultural connections between Texas and Mexico. The latest offering, Middle of Nowhere Vol. 2: Tex Mex Tapes, arrives on January 15 through Lost Highway Records, offering fans an immersive 16-track experience that explores the vibrant landscape where country rhythms meet the heat of the border.

This expanded project deepens the exploration begun with her previous work, delving further into the interplay of Texas dancehall rhythms, classic country, Norteño sounds, bluegrass, and pop. Musgraves has always drawn inspiration from the feeling of being in the “middle of nowhere,” and this album fully embraces the feeling of finding ease and inspiration in the undefined spaces between Texas, Tennessee, and Mexico.

The new collection is a musical tapestry woven with cultural exchange. It features 11 original songs alongside five covers, and four tracks sung entirely in Spanish, creating a sonic bridge between two rich traditions. The album’s tracklist is a celebration of this fusion, including tracks like “Weekend in Texas” and the beloved Norteño classic “Mi Tesoro.”

The album is packed with high-profile collaborations and unique performances. It features a Spanish-language version of “Uncertain, TX” with the Mexican group Intocable, alongside a spectacular live recording of “Tú Solo Tú,” performed in Mexico City with the renowned Mariachi Oro De América. Musgraves also shares her signature flair by covering George Strait’s “All My Exes Live in Texas” and Freddy Fender’s “Before the Next Teardrop Falls.”

The deep dive into Tex Mex sounds is evident in the material, which spans tracks like “Pretty Horses,” “Denim on Denim,” and “Rodeo,” setting the stage for a truly cross-cultural musical adventure. Fans can also experience tracks like “Mi Tesoro,” “Desert Eyes,” and the engaging “Pity Party.”

As Musgraves continues to tour, she is riding a wave of critical acclaim. She is currently winding down her North American arena tour in support of her previous work, while also preparing for major recognition at the upcoming CMA Awards, where she is nominated for Album of the Year and Musical Event of the Year for her acclaimed duet, “Horses and Divorces.”
