Junior Boys reveal new music ‘The Gore’ and ‘Underneath the Moon’

Canadian electronic pop group Junior Boys are plunging listeners into a darkly cinematic landscape with their latest offering, the album The Gore, which is available starting February 12th. This new release is not just a collection of tracks; it is a deep dive into the artist’s fascination with the darker corners of existence, drawing heavily from themes of horror, memory, and the beauty of analog sound.

The inspiration behind The Gore is deeply personal, rooted in the experiences of Jeremy Greenspan, who used the creative process to explore themes inspired by his lifelong love for sci-fi horror and the poignant losses of his father and a childhood friend. The resulting music serves as a noisy, visceral counterpart to the thoughtful ambiance of their previous work, Waiting Game, exploring similar existential themes.

Greenspan brought this vision to life using unique production methods. He utilized old tape loop techniques with an analog Tascam tape machine to achieve the unsettling, ephemeral quality of film, paying homage to the beauty and imperfection of older recording technology. This approach echoes the visual and thematic influences, particularly the atmosphere of films like Skinamarink.

The creative journey for The Gore also touched upon deeper personal themes, drawing on material from an earlier, unreleased album, K, which explored concepts related to Jewish prayer and memory, weaving personal grief into a broader artistic tapestry.

The Gore is being launched with an immersive series of events designed to fully envelop the audience. The experience goes beyond a simple release, featuring a full album playback accompanied by unique visualizations, a screening of Michael Snow’s experimental 1967 film Wavelength, and a candid Q&A session with Greenspan.

The album features a potent tracklist that invites listeners on a journey through unsettling soundscapes:

  • Funny How Time Slips Away
  • Night Service
  • The Tabernacle
  • Hineni
  • Underneath the Moon
  • Holding Back Secrets
  • Ligeia
  • Kill Baby Kill

  • Randman Blues

Fans can already stream the single Underneath the Moon and pre-order the full album through the official channels. Mark your calendars for listening and screening events in 2027, with dates including public records in Brooklyn, NY, and screenings in Seattle, WA, and Toronto, ON.
