Jamie Campbell Bower debunks ‘Conformity Gate’ final episode theory

Recently, this dynamic boiled over as actor Jamie Campbell Bower stepped in to put an end to one of the most persistent theories swirling around the series: the existence of a secret, extra episode known as ‘Conformity Gate.’

Following the conclusion of the show on New Year’s Eve, many viewers felt that the fate of Eleven and the narrative ending left too much open-ended. This led to the widespread belief that the ambiguous conclusion was merely an illusion orchestrated by the main antagonist, Vecna, rather than a true final chapter.

But for fans craving definitive closure, the absence of this supposed ‘ninth episode’ caused considerable disappointment. When pressed about the craziest theory circulating online, Bower firmly dismissed it. “That there was gonna be another episode,” he explained, denying the idea outright. “Everyone was like, ‘Conformity Gate, there’s gonna be a ninth episode.’ I was like, ‘If there is, I’m not in it! I shot what I shot, I’m done.’”

Bower suggested that this intense focus on a secret finale was driven less by plot and more by an online phenomenon. He pointed to what he called confirmation bias, noting that the actions of the cast fed into the cycle: “Anything that we did was like, ‘Well, that just proves it.’ They were like, ‘That’s it, it’s coming.’ And I still get asked the question, even now.”

The desire for a secret ending wasn’t unique to fans. Other cast members shared similar feelings about the show’s conclusion. Matthew Modine had previously expressed that he was not a fan of the series’ final arc and privately hoped the theory about an extra episode might have been true.

Meanwhile, the creators kept Eleven’s ultimate fate closely guarded. Millie Bobby Brown recently revealed that only three people—the main cast—know the truth about Eleven after the finale, having shared this secret directly with the show’s creators, The Duffer Brothers. She emphasized that this knowledge is a private pledge: “Do not tell anyone. Because we made it a secret kind of pledge,” she stated.

The buzz around the series continued off-screen, even as the show faced recent setbacks in critical recognition, including being recently shut out of the Emmy nominations for Best Drama and other acting categories. As high-profile talent like Bower shared performances with acts such as Biffy Clyro, it was clear that while actors might deny wild fan theories, the magic and mystery created by the show continue to captivate audiences long after the credits roll.
