Jack White mourns brother Eddie Gillis

The world of music and artistry is currently pausing as musician Jack White mourns the loss of his older brother, Edward “Eddie” Gillis. Gillis was more than just family; he was a vital figure in the history of Detroit’s music scene, overseeing the operational heart of Third Man Records and leaving behind a legacy woven with creativity and generosity.

In a heartfelt post, White shared the news on Saturday, reflecting on the beautiful soul that has passed away. He described Eddie as a caring, funny, and generous person whom everybody loved. The shared grief underscores the profound impact Eddie had on White’s life and the music industry.

Edward Gillis dedicated a significant portion of his life to the craft of vinyl pressing, running the Third Man Pressing facility for ten years. This plant, which opened in 2017 in Detroit’s Cass Corridor, became a crucial hub for the production of “hundreds of thousands” of records for other artists. As one of the few artists to own his own pressing plant, White benefited from his brother’s entrepreneurial spirit and dedication to the craft.

Before diving into the world of vinyl, Gillis had a demanding and creative career in the culinary arts. He ran kitchens and bake shops for prestigious establishments like the Ritz-Carlton and Beaumont Hospital, demonstrating a breadth of talent that extended far beyond music.

Beyond the professional sphere, the bond between Jack White and Eddie was built on shared memories and formative lessons. Gillis was the guitar player in the family during their childhood, and he played a significant role in shaping White’s musical journey. White fondly recalled the simple, timeless lessons Eddie imparted—from how to string a guitar and fish on the Detroit river to how to handle a stick shift. These shared experiences cemented Eddie’s place as an amazing big brother.

Eddie Gillis leaves behind a loving family, including his wife, Angie, and their two children, Amelia and Garrett. His life story, rich with both artistic ambition and deep personal connections, serves as a powerful reminder of the impact these unique relationships can have on the world.
