Inside the $130M restoration: Loew’s Jersey Theatre Reopens in November
A century of cinematic history is about to get a massive upgrade. The nearly 100-year-old Loew’s Jersey Theatre is preparing for a spectacular grand re-opening on November 13, set to host a performance by the acclaimed Trey Anastasio Band.
Nestled in the heart of Jersey City’s Journal Square, this historic venue is shedding its past limitations to emerge as a fully restored, state-of-the-art live performance destination. This ambitious transformation is the result of a massive redevelopment effort involving the Jersey City Redevelopment Agency, the State of New Jersey/New Jersey Economic Development Authority, and Harris Blitzer Sports & Entertainment.
The journey to this modern spectacle was more than just construction; it was a battle for preservation. The theatre, one of five historic “Loew’s Wonder Theatres” built in the 1920s, was threatened with demolition. Local preservationists, alongside HBSE, championed the cause, recognizing the irreplaceable character of the structure.
The renovation, which cost $130 million, aimed to meticulously preserve the building’s original character while injecting 21st-century functionality. This process brought the theater up to modern code, integrating new electric and plumbing systems, state-of-the-art HVAC, and an updated sound system.
Architectural integrity was paramount. While the exterior and historical features were carefully maintained—including the restoration of the fully seated balcony—contractors worked to modernize the experience. The goal, as venue management noted, was to ensure that while the building felt steeped in history, the live experience was completely contemporary.
One of the most fascinating elements of the restoration is the seating arrangement. The theatre has been transformed to accommodate flexible configurations, allowing it to host concerts, sporting events, and film presentations for between 2,600 and 4,000 guests. Furthermore, the orchestra seating is entirely mobile, enabling standing room only shows, adding another layer of dynamic flexibility to the venue.
The theatre’s golden age was filled with legendary performances, hosting acts like Duke Ellington and the Four Seasons. Now, it remains a focal point for artistic expression, designed specifically for the modern artist. The focus is on the audience experience, ensuring that every seat offers an incredible view.
Artists often seek venues that offer both history and perspective. As one head of entertainment noted, there is a preference for spaces that offer beautiful architecture and a unique atmosphere. This commitment is reflected in the venue’s design, which masterfully balances the grandeur of the past with the dynamism of the present.
The restoration also brought back historic elements, including the original pipe organ, which has been fully restored and will continue to be serviced. The lighting system and the new LED marquee, designed to mimic the original aesthetic, provide a striking visual backdrop for the modern performances.
The grand reopening weekend promises an electrifying schedule, kicking off with the Trey Anastasio Band on November 13, followed by powerful acts like The War On Drugs on Saturday, November 14. The month is packed with diverse musical events, including Jodeci, Derek Hough, and Chris Tomlin, ensuring that the Loew’s Jersey Theatre will be buzzing with music and unforgettable experiences well into the new year.
