Inflation reshapes Colorado live music

The vibrant live music and festival scene in Colorado is facing an unexpected squeeze. As inflation continues to bite into everyday budgets, fans are increasingly forced to rethink their entertainment spending, challenging the dream of attending major summer events.

A new survey, the Summer Squeeze Survey released by Red Rocks Credit Union, paints a stark picture of financial strain. Nearly 33% of Colorado residents are planning to skip concerts, festivals, and major summer events altogether, while another quarter of the population remains undecided, caught in a balancing act between desire and cost.

This trend highlights a broader shift in consumer behavior. From Gen Z to Gen X, fans are becoming acutely aware of where their discretionary income goes, prioritizing necessity over spectacle.

When diving into the reasons why audiences are staying home, the reality is more complex than just the initial ticket price. While cost of admission is a significant hurdle for 59% of respondents, the true culprits lie in the logistics of the experience.

Transportation costs emerged as the primary deterrent for 64% of attendees. Beyond the price of the ticket, fans are facing a cascade of ancillary expenses. Nearly 50% cited overpriced food and beverage options at venues, and a notable 35% pointed to expensive lodging for destination festivals.

This financial pressure is not evenly distributed. Households earning between $50,000 and $100,000 annually were the most likely to cite both transportation and ticket prices as major barriers to attending summer events, demonstrating that the squeeze is hitting middle-income families particularly hard.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Colorado residents are pivoting away from expensive live events toward more affordable forms of entertainment. Outdoor recreation is increasingly outpacing live music as the top summer priority for many fans.

For the live music industry, this presents a critical challenge. While bucket-list venues like Red Rocks and major festivals continue to draw massive demand, smaller venues and regional events are now facing significantly steeper competition for fan dollars.

To maintain viability, artists and venues must now prioritize transparency. The focus must shift to delivering undeniable value and ensuring that pricing reflects the entire cost of the experience, allowing these essential cultural events to thrive.
