Indigo De Souza launches GoFundMe to free album
When an artist faces devastating personal loss, they often find the strength to channel that pain into something beautiful. For North Carolina singer-songwriter Indigo De Souza, that strength is now fueling a fight for artistic freedom, turning personal tragedy into a powerful campaign for independence.
De Souza has launched a crowdsourcing effort to help release her long-awaited album, Precipice, free from the constraints of her record label. The album itself was born from a deeply personal period of reflection, a process that was further underscored by a traumatic experience.
The journey to releasing the music took an unexpected turn. Following the devastation of Hurricane Helene, which flooded her home in Marshall, NC, De Souza lost much of her possessions. Yet, amidst the heartbreak, she found a profound anchor: the nylon-stringed guitar that served as both a comfort and a crucial part of her creative process, helping her shape some of her most meaningful songs.
While the album was finished, the release stalled. De Souza explained that the waiting period was filled with indescribable pain, feeling stuck while negotiating the freedom of her work. She realized that the relationship with the industry was no longer aligned with her values, creating a frustrating cycle of feeling constrained by business and bureaucracy.
This realization led to a pivotal decision: walking away from the system. Leaving a record deal is not an easy choice, and artists often face immense obstacles when attempting to secure their creative autonomy. Yet, De Souza demonstrated the bravery of those who refuse to settle, echoing the spirit of artists throughout history who have fought for their right to speak their truth.
Now, the focus is on reclaiming ownership. De Souza is raising $90,000 USD to repay the investment made in the album and secure the necessary rights to release it independently. This effort is a powerful push toward full artistic control.
The campaign is already showing community support, with the GoFundMe initiative having successfully raised just shy of $8,600 to date. It is a testament to the fact that when artists stand up for their vision, the community responds with incredible solidarity.
