Ian Hill retires from Judas Priest due to arthritis

The legendary sound of Judas Priest is facing a poignant transition as one of its foundational figures steps away from the stage. Ian Hill, the bassist who served as the band’s backbone for decades, has announced his retirement from the group due to the progression of his arthritis.

The news, shared recently by the band on social media, came with a sense of melancholy, framed by the deep bond between Hill and the music he helped create. He described his time with the band as invaluable, expressing how much he will be missed by his colleagues.

In a deeply personal statement, Hill offered an honest reflection on his journey. He noted that for a long time, when asked how long he could continue, his answer was always tied to his performances. “I’ve always answered, ‘Until my performances suffer,'” he shared. “I hate to say it, but that time has come.”

The physical toll of this ongoing battle has been significant. Since the onset of his condition several years ago, Hill has dealt with what he referred to as “evil arthritis,” which has progressed into an advanced state in his left shoulder and right hand, his right shoulder, and both knees.

Despite rigorous treatment involving painkillers, gels, and cortisone injections, the physical limitations eventually became too much. A recent setback occurred when he snapped a tendon in his left shoulder, preventing him from participating in the band’s recent show in London.

Facing the possibility that he might not have the necessary strength to complete a full stage show, Hill reflected on the journey, offering gratitude for the life he has lived. He concluded by thanking his bandmates for letting him share his musical life.

Even as Hill concludes his active role, his legacy remains etched into the history of Judas Priest. He joined the band in 1970 and contributed basslines to every one of their studio albums, leaving an indelible mark on the band’s sound.

The band continues forward, ensuring the music endures. For the upcoming tours, Davey Rimmer of Urian Head has stepped in, bringing his talent to the touring lineup. This seamless transition allows the music and the legacy of Judas Priest to continue resonating with their devoted fans.
