Heartworms dance the dark humour of ‘Guess I’m Stuck In The Dark’ on new album
Jojo Orme, the enigmatic force behind Heartworms, is diving headfirst into a new era defined by uncertainty and dark humour. Her latest single, ‘Guess I’m Stuck In The Dark’, serves as a thrilling preview of the forthcoming album, hinting at a sound that is as groove-based as it is macabre.
The track is not just a catchy indie noir banger; it is an exploration of the mind’s tendency to deceive us when we are lost in the shadows. It asks how we conjure fears during moments of insecurity, and how we can navigate that darkness while still trying to party alongside it.
The genesis of the song was born from a very real, vulnerable moment. During a power-cut while she was attempting to write, Orme found herself drifting into a stream of consciousness. The fear of the dark and a deep sense of personal insecurity fueled the lyrical flow, transforming a simple incident into a profound statement about feeling trapped.
As Orme worked with producer Dan Carey, the raw feeling of that experience was stripped back to its bare essentials, giving the track its distinct, glitterball shimmer over a stark soundscape.
“Over time, a lot of my lyrics do change meaning when I start to realise that maybe it was subconscious telling me something,” Orme shared. She explained that grappling with this process led to a deeper inquiry into the idea of achieving greatness for oneself, rather than for external approval.
She found that the darkness, rather than being an obstacle, became a tool. “There’s a problem where the more you look within, the more of a mess it is, so when you are trying to come up with something you have to just not look anywhere and the darkness just helps you to straight-up say it,” she noted.
This theme of internal wrestling—the disenchantment and the lessons learned from it—is the backbone of the new album. Orme describes the creative process as moving through these feelings like water, taking the shape of each world she felt.
The album itself is a testament to emotional evolution. Orme has recently navigated significant life changes, including marriage and separation, which have profoundly reshaped her identity. This personal journey has become the core inspiration for her music, focusing on coping and moving forward rather than striving for an idealized state.
Aesthetically, Heartworms is embracing change. During recent shows in Italy, Orme experimented with a new look, embracing elements like the woollen suit. She found that performing when she felt uncomfortable unlocks a different kind of authenticity.
This exploration extends beyond fashion. Whether it’s trying new guitar shapes or embracing the sound of the Interpol and Bloc Party, Orme is focused on letting the music dictate her form. She isn’t chasing a single definition; she is simply letting the sound become who she is.
With the album now fully recorded and the visual elements being finalized, Heartworms is gearing up for a major European tour, co-headlining with Interpol and Bloc Party. It is a journey defined by self-discovery, dark humour, and the relentless pursuit of authentic sound.
