Hayley Williams honors Chad Gilbert’s influence on music

The music world is mourning the loss of a foundational figure, as guitarist Chad Gilbert of New Found Glory passed away peacefully in his sleep on Sunday morning, following a five-year battle with cancer.

The news comes with a poignant reflection, particularly from Hayley Williams, who recently shared a tribute to her ex-husband, reflecting on the profound impact he had on her life and the culture he helped shape.

Williams, who shared a marriage with Gilbert from 2016 to 2017, took the opportunity to celebrate his legacy. She noted that her time connected with him taught her immense amounts about the hardcore and pop-punk communities, describing him as a legend in the scene.

“He introduced me to people that continue to shape my life in beautiful ways, and to music and culture that has made life a lot richer,” she shared. She highlighted Gilbert’s role in guiding the genre forward, emphasizing his passion for fostering the community and his inspiring attitude.

Williams further explored the deep connection between their history and her artistic output. She discussed how her experiences, including the relationship’s breakdown, fueled her songwriting. Tracks like Dead Horse dealt explicitly with the complexity of their past, serving as a moment of digging up buried emotions.

She explained that writing about the breakup and subsequent emotional turmoil was a process of uncovering deep truths. She described the experience as finding “this bubbling lava underneath a hard stone,” a raw excavation of personal feelings.

The influence of Gilbert extended far beyond the music. His legacy within New Found Glory is undeniable; his songwriting, humor, and relentless drive helped shape the band for nearly three decades. His bandmates spoke of his lasting effect, noting that his spirit will continue to resonate on every stage.

In the wake of the announcement, Williams expressed her gratitude, sending love and sympathy to Gilbert’s family and friends. While mourning this loss, Williams remains actively engaged in her career, currently on the North American leg of The Hayley Williams Show tour. She recently brought out Rico Nasty to perform “Airplanes” and has announced plans for a UK and European tour in summer 2027, continuing to share her unique voice with the world.
