Hackney’s Moth Club wins major victory for grassroots music
Hackney’s Moth Club is celebrating a hard-won victory for grassroots music, securing a vital future for the beloved venue after successfully fighting off planning threats.
This celebrated 300-capacity venue, known for its famously sparkly ceiling, stands as one of the capital city’s favourite independent spots. However, its future faced an imminent threat following two separate planning applications filed earlier this year that aimed to push the venue out of existence.
The battle for the space was ongoing. While the initial planning application was refused in March, the fight continued against a second application that threatened the venue‘s existence. The community remained resolute, refusing to let the threat derail the dream of the music hall.
The culmination of this effort came on October 30th, when the Moth Club crew took to social media to announce the refusal of the final planning application. The message was pure celebration: “We got some great news this morning! WE’VE DONE IT! The second planning application next to the venue has been refused now too!”
This victory was not just about a building; it was a testament to the power of community action. To amplify their message, the group gathered support from over 35,000 fans and friends of the Moth Club, who signed a petition rejecting the planning proposals and ensured their voices were heard loud and clear.
The celebration extended gratitude to the Hackney Council and the planning department for their due diligence, as well as the Mayor of Hackney, Zoë Garbett, and her team, for their support of grassroots music in Hackney.
The Moth Club crew also shone a spotlight on the wider network that supports nightlife and music. They thanked groups like Hackney Nights, Save Our Scene, the NTIA, and the Music Venue Trust for their tireless work in championing these spaces.
Looking ahead, the venue teased the future with an exciting promise: if this application was refused, they were already envisioning the greatest party the Moth has ever witnessed. They made it clear they were ready to deliver an unforgettable experience.
Ultimately, the message resonated far beyond the walls of the venue. The crew concluded by stressing that this fight was about more than just one building; it was about every space in every town and city on the planet. They affirmed that if they could achieve this victory in Hackney, they could do it anywhere, committing to stay and thrive.
