GWAR Founder Chuck Varga dies after cancer battle
Hail the Sexecutioner: Remembering Chuck Varga, A Legend of GWAR
The heavy metal world, and indeed the realm of extreme performance art, has lost a true titan. Chuck Varga, a founding member of the iconic band GWAR, passed away peacefully following a battle with cancer at the age of 68.
The news of his passing was announced recently, sharing a moment of reflection with those who knew and admired his unique contributions. This was shared by GWAR bassist Casey Orr, who performs as Beefcake the Mighty, marking a poignant moment for the entire community.
Varga was more than just a musician; he was a multidisciplinary force whose artistic vision defined a massive cultural presence. He was a foundational figure in the creation of GWAR and the associated Slave Pit collective, demonstrating a gift for performance, costume design, and comic art that remains powerfully felt today.
For over three decades, Varga embodied the terrifying and unforgettable persona of the Sexecutioner, a role he performed with intensity from 1985 to 2022. But his career extended far beyond the stage. As a co-founder of Slave Pit Studios in Richmond, Virginia, Varga helped develop an art-driven project that blossomed into GWAR. He was instrumental in creating the elaborate world of the band, contributing costumes, sets, props, and striking comic art that brought the mythology of GWAR to life.
Though Varga stepped away from active performing in 1997 and eventually retired from the stage in 2021, his influence is indelible. As one of the original architects of the Slave Pit collective, his artistic vision and character designs continue to echo through the history of GWAR, leaving an enormous legacy on the group today.
In his tribute, Casey Orr reflected on Varga’s character and character. He described Varga as “one of a kind. As an artist, as a performer; as a scholar and a gentleman.” Orr expressed a deep sense of gratitude, noting that knowing Varga made the world less and himself better.
Orr beautifully summed up his remembrance, concluding with, “Raise your glass and tell his tales. Legends never die. Hail Varga! Hail Sexicutioner!”
Amidst the sadness of his loss, the GWAR community rallied in support of Varga’s family. The band launched a fundraiser to assist with the mounting costs of his medical care, including cancer treatments, hospice care, specialized medical equipment, and additional nursing support. Donors who contributed received exclusive merchandise, including a new T-shirt designed by Varga, ensuring that the memory and artistic spirit of the Sexecutioner endure.
