Grimes drops dark rave single Accelerando and new album Psyopera
Grimes is diving headfirst into the future with her latest release, announcing the new album Psyopera and dropping the intensely dark, ravey track Accelerando as a new single. This experimental project signals a new chapter for the Canadian artist, building upon the artistic foundations laid by her previous work, including the 2020 album Miss Anthropocene.
The new album is set to be the first from Grimes since 2020, and it arrives bundled with a cryptic video release that throws the audience directly into the surreal. In the clip, Grimes sets an enigmatic tone, beginning with the line “Please wait patiently for the failure of the system” before welcoming viewers into the experience: “Welcome to the game.” The visuals accompanying the announcement delve into profound themes, exploring concepts of God, Eden, and the rapidly evolving landscape of artificial intelligence.
Central to the sound of Psyopera is, naturally, the theme of artificial intelligence. While the concepts are deeply relevant to modern life, Grimes acknowledges the complex nature of the technology, noting that she wishes she had “a bit more of the emotions on this side and a bit more computer on the other side.” This philosophical exploration gives the record a distinctly layered, intellectual edge.
When it comes to the emotional core of the album, the artist has drawn a clear line regarding her public life. She has assured fans that the new record will not feature any songs referencing her relationship with her ex, Elon Musk. This decision stems from a desire to keep the artistic focus purely on the thematic exploration of AI and the album’s internal landscape.
The personal context is certainly complex. Grimes shares three children with the Tesla and SpaceX CEO, including X Æ A-Xii, Exa Dark Sideræl Musk, and Techno Mechanicus. Though she and Musk announced their split in September 2021, they remain connected, a fact that adds a layer of real-world complexity to the artistic endeavor.
