Gord Downie’s Secret Path 10th Anniversary Concert

Ten years ago, a powerful story took flight, illuminating the often-hidden and painful history of the residential school experience. Gord Downie’s project, Secret Path—a blend of music, graphic novel, and animation—remains a vital testament to the journey of Chanie Wenjack, a 12-year-old Anishinaabe boy who sought to find his way home after running away from the system.

This powerful narrative, created by Downie, serves as an essential spotlight on the profound and lasting impacts of residential schools on Indigenous children, bringing their experiences into the public consciousness and demanding recognition for the institutions’ ongoing effects.

As the tenth anniversary approaches, the community is gathering to celebrate this legacy and honor the resilience of those who have carried these stories forward. To mark the occasion, the Gord Downie & Chanie Wenjack Fund (DWF) has announced a special honorary concert in Toronto on October 23rd, offering an opportunity for artists and the community to come together in reflection and celebration.

The concert promises to be an extraordinary event, featuring an exclusive covers project led by a vibrant array of Indigenous artists. A diverse group of talent will be performing the songs live, including Amanda Rheaume, Drives the Common Man, Mimi O’Bonsawin, Natasha Fisher, Julian Taylor, Aysanabee, Thea May, Wolf Saga, Reuben and the Bullhorn Singers, and Nimkii and the Niniis.

These artists will share their voices and interpretations of the music, creating a powerful tapestry that honors the themes of Secret Path while celebrating the strength and spirit of contemporary Indigenous culture. The performance will take place at the historic the Concert Hall in Toronto.

This event is more than just a concert; it is an act of remembrance and solidarity. It provides a platform for these artists to connect with the deep history of the stories shared by Chanie Wenjack and to reaffirm the enduring connection to home and culture.

For those wishing to attend and support this commemorative celebration, tickets are currently available through Eventbrite.
