Glenn Hughes recovers from 10-hour heart surgery
Rock legend Glenn Hughes is making a powerful statement about resilience and recovery following major heart surgery, embracing the journey ahead with an infectious optimism.
Hughes, a celebrated figure in rock history known for his work with Black Sabbath and Deep Purple, recently shared an update on his health, confirming that he is on the mend after undergoing a significant procedure. He successfully completed a ten-hour open-heart surgery, an aortic valve replacement, at UCLA Ronald Reagan Medical Center, a process identical to the one he underwent back in 2013.
In a post, Hughes reflected on the experience, praising his medical team and assuring his fans that he is recovering well. “Each day as I move forward, I am getting my energy back,” he shared. “There is only love in my life. There are no mistakes.”
This recovery follows a period of personal health challenges that prompted Hughes to step away from touring in August. After half a century spent on the road, the Rock & Roll Hall of Famer made the difficult but necessary decision to prioritize his health, listening to his doctor’s advice.
During that time, Hughes had consulted with his medical team, reviewing numerous MRIs, CT scans, and an echocardiogram, which collectively confirmed the need for major intervention. He expressed gratitude for the opportunities life had provided, acknowledging his path through music and the support he received from those who walked alongside him.
Hughes’ career is a rich tapestry of musical evolution, beginning with his time in the British funk rock band Trapeze in the early 1970s. He later became the bassist for Deep Purple, sharing vocals on multiple albums, and carved out a unique solo path with releases like Play Me Out. Throughout the late 1970s and early 1980s, he contributed to landmark albums, including Black Sabbath’s Seventh Star.
More recently, Hughes has continued to pursue music, joining supergroup Black Country Communion and the rock band The Dead Daisies, demonstrating an enduring passion for his craft.
As he moves forward, Hughes offered a profound message to his audience, encouraging a shift in perspective. He reminded everyone that growth often comes through difficult experiences, urging fans to be thankful for the journey wherever it leads. He stated that anger over circumstances hinders growth; instead, one should focus on gratitude for every experience encountered.
This message resonated deeply with his peers, who offered a chorus of support. Fellow musicians, including Rudy Sarzo, Frank Bello, Brian Tichy, Jeff Gutt, and Eddie Trunk, shared their well wishes, sending encouragement and prayers for a speedy recovery to the legendary singer.
