Glen Hansard covers The Pogues’ Bottle Of Smoke

A soulful connection bridges the gap between two musical giants, Glen Hansard and Shane MacGowan, through a new recording of the classic track Bottle of Smoke. This heartfelt performance is part of a larger tribute, bringing together the legacies of two Irish songwriters whose friendship and dedication extended far beyond the music itself.

Recorded in October 2024, the session further solidifies the bond between Hansard and MacGowan. The work is featured on 20th Century Paddy – The Songs of Shane MacGowan, an expansive tribute project set to be released in November. This collection promises an incredible roster of talent, including U2, Tom Waits, Hozier, Jessie Buckley, Johnny Depp, Imelda May, Steve Earle, and the Libertines.

The rendition of Bottle of Smoke is more than just a song; it is a powerful testament to their shared history. The performance itself was a live event, captured on October 1, 2024, at Los Angeles’ Wiltern Theatre. The acoustic magic was enhanced by a guest appearance from Pogues accordion player James Fearnley, adding a layer of authentic, raw energy to the track.

The track, originally featured on the Pogues’ 1988 album If I Should Fall From Grace With God, is steeped in history. Hansard’s version is a beautiful blending of nostalgia and profound emotion, honoring a shared musical lineage.

The emotional weight of this release is amplified by the context of the tributes. Shane MacGowan’s widow, Victoria Mary Clarke, shared how deeply meaningful Hansard’s contribution is. She noted that Glen provided a magnificent version of the song, infusing it with the soul and spirit that characterized his work. She emphasized that Shane adored Glen and admired his talent, wishing for his presence to be part of this legacy.

This beautiful recording serves as a poignant reminder of the shared compassion these artists held for those experiencing homelessness. Both Hansard and MacGowan were deeply committed to helping others, with Hansard being a driving force behind the Dublin Simon Community’s Christmas Eve Busk, an event that symbolized generosity and hope for many.

To ensure this musical tribute also serves a vital cause, fifty percent of the proceeds from the album will be donated to the Dublin Simon Community, supporting people experiencing homelessness across Ireland. It is a powerful way to channel artistic legacy into tangible community support.
