At 82, the ‘Empress of Soul’ has announced plans to ease into fewer shows as she transitions into the next stage of her career and personal life. This decision comes amid a desire to focus on cherished personal connections, including time spent with her husband and visiting her beloved grandbabies.
In a recent statement, Knight shared her intention, emphasizing that she is looking forward to this new era. However, this announcement coincided with growing public concern stemming from recent footage of some of her stage performances. Clips circulating online, including shows like her July performance at the Hollywood Bowl with Smokey Robinson, sparked discussions among fans regarding her well-being.
Some of the footage reportedly showed Knight occasionally missing cues or receiving assistance from backing singers during performances. While her husband and manager, William McDowell, maintained that she has “good days and bad,” they affirmed that her decision to continue performing was entirely her own.
McDowell further clarified that while he denied any diagnosis of dementia, he confirmed that Knight would undergo a medical evaluation soon. He also shared that they are actively working to secure a performance venue closer to their home in North Carolina, which would allow her to sing comfortably without extensive travel.
These concerns surface against a backdrop of complex family history. A year prior, Knight’s son, Shanga Hankerson, had made public allegations regarding his mother’s care, asserting that the touring schedule was detrimental, and claimed that Knight had experienced memory problems. Knight strongly denied these claims, insisting that her health and performances had been misrepresented.
Her publicist described the allegations as unfounded, noting that Hankerson maintained no substantial contact with his mother. While Knight’s representatives indicated they were considering legal action over the comments, she firmly reiterated her state of mind, assuring everyone that she is healthy, happy, and enjoying time with friends and family.
