Gillian Gilbert reveals cancer diagnosis
A health discussion surrounding the legendary New Order has taken an unexpected and deeply personal turn. What began as public speculation about the well-being of drummer Stephen Morris evolved into a poignant revelation about the health of his wife, Gillian Gilbert.
The confusion arose following a recent interview where Morris touched upon a serious health issue that was expected to prevent him from participating in upcoming events, including the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction and the band’s scheduled South American tour. Morris had expressed a desire to keep the specifics private, acknowledging that the illness was not something easily cured.
However, the narrative shifted dramatically when Gilbert, New Order’s keyboardist and Morris’s wife of 32 years, stepped forward to provide clarification. She addressed the public concern, confirming that Morris was indeed well, but revealing that she was the one living with cancer.
Gilbert, 65, shared that she and Morris were incredibly touched by the outpouring of public concern, though she emphasized the need for privacy as she continues her treatment.
This clarification comes amid a period of transition for New Order. Morris and Gilbert had already announced plans to sit out the upcoming South American dates in November and December due to health reasons, marking the first time the group would perform without founding drummer Morris. Gilbert had previously taken a hiatus from touring with the group between 1998 and 2011.
Despite the personal circumstances, the band’s professional milestones proceeded. Only original bassist Peter Hook, who has maintained a complex relationship with the group for decades, was confirmed to attend the Rock Hall induction alongside the group’s achievements.
