Just two months before the group is set for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, the band’s original keyboardist and guitarist, Gillian Gilbert, shared a significant health update with her fans.
Gilbert disclosed that she is living with cancer in a social media post shared by the band’s official accounts. This announcement follows earlier discussions regarding the health of band member Stephen Morris, who had been the subject of speculation in a recent interview.
In a previous conversation with Rolling Stone, Morris had been interpreted by some as being seriously ill. He confirmed that while he was facing health challenges, he was well. However, Gilbert clarified that the illness she was experiencing was her own, allowing her to set the record straight and address the misunderstanding.
“It is in fact me, who like many other people, is living with cancer,” Gilbert explained, emphasizing that she was sharing her personal experience rather than commenting on her bandmate’s health.
Gilbert chose to keep the specific nature and progress of her diagnosis private, focusing instead on the need for privacy while she navigates her treatment. She expressed immense gratitude for the kindness and well wishes she had received from her community.
“We are enormously grateful for everyone’s kindness and support and would appreciate some privacy as I continue with my treatment,” she stated, underscoring the importance of personal space during this time.
The story of New Order itself is a compelling tale of evolution, born from the ashes of Joy Division following the death of frontman Ian Curtis. The remaining members, Bernard Sumner, Stephen Morris, and Peter Hook, regrouped in Manchester in 1980 to forge a new, internationally successful sound. They achieved remarkable success, landing eleven top-ten albums in the United Kingdom and achieving significant traction on the US charts.
