Geordie Greep responds to misconduct claims live on stage

The world of music, often a space for shared joy and vibrant energy, can sometimes be intersected by deeply uncomfortable and serious allegations. Recently, this tension came to the fore during a performance by former Black Midi singer Geordie Greep in Vancouver.

While the night was intended to be a celebration of live music at The Pearl venue, an attendee reportedly disrupted the event by distributing flyers accusing Greep of sexual misconduct. These flyers contained alarming claims, including the explicit accusation of being a rapist and a reference to an unspecified incident from the previous morning.

The message on the flyers suggested a disturbing sense of entitlement, urging others to question the singer’s actions and asking the public to voice their opinions on the matter.

In response to these allegations, Greep took an unusual step. Two hours after the scheduled start time, he appeared before the audience without his band, taking the time to address the accusations directly.

During this public address, Greep acknowledged that while there had been a misunderstanding that occurred during a house party the night before, the specific claims of being a rapist were untrue. He explained that the situation was a misstep, and he expressed profound regret, stating clearly, “I would never rape a woman. I’m not a rapist. It’s not how that went down.”

He detailed that the incident was the result of a misunderstanding and that he felt extremely sorry and upset about the situation. Rather than continuing the performance under these circumstances, Greep announced that the band would not be on stage. He offered attendees the option to receive refunds if they felt uncomfortable and wished to leave the gig, ensuring that the focus shifted to the attendees’ comfort.

To further demonstrate his commitment to accountability, Greep announced that the proceeds from the performance would be donated to the Against Violence organisation in British Columbia. This act of transparency underscored a desire to use the platform to support relevant causes.

Though the immediate situation was resolved on stage, the fallout from the allegations continued to draw attention. Greep’s tour schedule remains active, with upcoming dates planned in Boise and Salt Lake City, as the artist continues to navigate the public dialogue surrounding these serious claims.
