The legendary alternative rock outfit Gang of Youths is back from their hibernation, delivering a fresh sound with their new release Things Take Time. This new single marks the band’s first new music in four years and serves as a perfect, mellow meditation on the ebb and flow of life itself.
The track, penned by bandmates David Le’aupepe, Tom Hobden, Donnie Borzestowski, and Jung Kim, beautifully captures the theme of patience and the natural cycle of growth, decay, and regrowth. Le’aupepe spent weeks immersed in creative observation, chiseling away ideas in London, seeking inspiration from the warmer seasons and the concept of the ‘good life.’ This period of creative incubation allowed the band to strip away some of the grandiose ambitions that often define rock music, focusing instead on creating music that genuinely feels at ease and comforting.
Sonically, the track is a masterclass in nuanced arrangement. It highlights the band’s knack for crafting dense instrumentation, yet this time around, the focus is on atmosphere rather than sheer volume. The recording, handled at Decoy Studios in Suffolk, was engineered by Robert Sellens and Jung Kim, who also contributed key guitar and keyboard work.
The musicianship on the record is equally impressive, featuring Le’aupepe on vocals and piano, Hobden on violin, Borzestowski on drums, and Kim on guitar and keyboards, supplemented by contributions from Andrew Burgess, Nick Etwell, and Klara Schumann. This ensemble brought a rich texture to the sound, emphasizing sophisticated layering over flashy performance.
The band’s history is intertwined with their success in Australia, highlighted by their sophomore album Go Farther in Lightness, which topped the national ARIA Chart and earned numerous accolades. The move to London, coinciding with their rise to rock prominence, cemented their status as a major force in Australian rock culture.
Under new management from Red Light Management in the U.K., the band is enjoying a renewed energy. This creative momentum has translated into live performances, including recent Australian dates, demonstrating that the sound of Gang of Youths continues to evolve.
