Fans line Welsh streets for Bonnie Tyler’s final farewell

The world of music is mourning the loss of Bonnie Tyler, a figure whose unforgettable voice defined an era of pop-rock. Arrangements have been announced for her farewell in Wales next month, marking the beginning of tributes to a truly legendary artist.

The celebration of life service for Tyler will take place at Swansea Minster, St. Mary’s Church, on Monday, August 17, at noon BST, organized by her family.

The processional arrangements are set to honor her journey, bringing her coffin back to her home in Mumbles on Saturday, August 15, at 3:30 p.m. BST. Members of the public have been invited to pay their respects as the procession travels through Newton Road.

Following the service, Tyler will make a final journey through Skewen, Neath Port Talbot, the village where she grew up before her music launched her onto the international stage.

Tyler, born Gaynor Hopkins, passed away on July 8 at the age of 75 in a hospital in Portugal while receiving treatment for an ongoing illness. Her family confirmed that she unexpectedly passed away as a result of the illness for which she was being treated.

Her profound impact is captured in her enduring musical legacy. Tyler was remembered by those who knew her as a warm, generous artist whose music touched generations and continues to fill dance floors and karaoke booths around the world.

Her voice remains synonymous with some of pop culture’s most iconic anthems. Hits like Total Eclipse of the Heart, which topped the Billboard Hot 100 for four weeks in 1983, stand as defining recordings of the decade. She also left an indelible mark with songs such as It’s a Heartache and Holding Out for a Hero, the latter appearing on the Footloose soundtrack.

Over her five-decade career, Tyler released 18 studio albums and represented the United Kingdom at the 2013 Eurovision Song Contest with her performance of Believe in Me. She was recognized for her contributions to music, receiving an MBE in 2023.

As a final tribute, her family has requested that those wishing to honor her memory refrain from sending flowers and instead request donations to Noah’s Ark Children’s Hospital for Wales and Cerebral Palsy Cymru, two charitable organizations for which she served as patron.
