Everything But The Girl’s Blue Reservoir inspired by Moth Club

Everything But The Girl Finds Sanctuary in the Shadows: The Story Behind ‘Blue Reservoir’

Indie-electronica legends Everything But The Girl have unveiled their latest offering, the album Blue Reservoir, a sonic landscape deeply inspired by the raw, intimate atmosphere of their residency shows at London’s iconic Moth Club.

The new musical journey kicks off with the single Young And Dumb, offering a window into the duo’s creative process and the mood that fueled the recording. This release isn’t just a collection of songs; it’s an ode to finding comfort and clarity amidst the complexities of time.

In 2023, the married couple—Tracey Thorn and Ben Watt—rejoined the stage, performing stripped-back shows at the 300-capacity Moth Club in Hackney. These intimate gigs proved to be a powerful catalyst, inspiring the creation of Blue Reservoir. The unique alchemy of that environment provided the perfect crucible for the duo to explore new sonic territories.

Tracey Thorn noted that the resulting album felt like an immediate and honest statement of intent. “It’s a good, clear way of people grasping what we’re doing,” she shared. “We wanted to make it a statement of intent.”

The inspiration stemmed from shedding the expectation of grand production in favor of pure presence. The Moth Club setting allowed them to strip everything back, focusing on the essential elements: the melody, the vocals, and the connection with the audience. This focus led them back to the folk, jazz, and Brazilian influences they pioneered in the early days of their career, creating a sound that felt both deeply personal and wonderfully nostalgic.

Ben Watt echoed this sentiment, describing the experience as incredibly liberating. The intimacy of playing in a small venue forced them to prioritize connection over spectacle. “We realised that some of those small club sounds started really interesting us again,” he explained. “It actually puts a wall up in a way. In that context, it was just that this intimacy really works, so where can we find some music that helps us express that for a new set of songs?”

The album’s core theme is grappling with temporality. The track Forward, with its lyric about moving through the darkness into the light, captures the inherent tension of living in the present while constantly negotiating the weight of the past and the promise of the future. It’s a profound reflection on how we maintain energy and passion as we navigate life’s ongoing dialogue with time.

The journey to creating this work was about rediscovering how they could be most authentic. The decision to focus on the experience—the raw, unscripted energy of a small space—was transformative, moving beyond the pressure of big tours and status. It allowed them to reconnect with the simplicity of their musical roots, finding a comfortable sound that felt inherently true to them.

The spirit of the project also extends to the venues themselves. The Moth Club, and venues like it, represent a vital counterpoint to the relentless pace of gentrification. The duo spoke about the importance of these grassroots spaces in surviving, emphasizing that their existence ensures that music has a place to thrive, regardless of external pressures.

As Everything But The Girl move forward with Blue Reservoir, they continue to champion a form of music that values authenticity and connection. It is a reminder that sometimes, the most profound musical statements emerge not from the biggest stages, but from the quiet, beautiful spaces where genuine human connection can flourish.
