Ekko Astral announces indefinite hiatus and farewell shows
The experimental and politically charged chaos surrounding Ekko Astral has reached an abrupt pause. The Washington, D.C.-based punk collective, known for their fiercely independent spirit, has announced plans to wrap up its activities, at least for the foreseeable future.
Lately, the band has navigated a turbulent path, balancing intense creative ambitions with significant internal and external friction. This tension escalated when bandleader Jael Holzman initiated legal action, filing a peace order petition against former drummer Miri Tyler just one month after Tyler had announced her departure from the group.
Adding to the complexity of their journey was the struggle for control over their musical output. Ekko Astral were gearing up to release their highly anticipated album, the beltway is burning, with plans to release it independently. However, the label they were slated to work with, Topshelf Records, decided not to support the project.
This decision created further obstacles. Despite their desire for autonomy, the band faced a cascade of setbacks: the album release was postponed indefinitely, and Ekko Astral withdrew from planned events, including Liberation Weekend II, the trans-rights festival they had been looking forward to.
