Drummer Mike Peters retires from Cancer Bats touring
Drummer Mike Peters Steps Back from the Road to Focus on Family
In a move that prioritizes family above the relentless demands of touring, Mike Peters, the drummer for the acclaimed punk and hardcore band Cancer Bats, has announced his retirement from touring. The decision signals a shift in focus, allowing Peters to step away from the grueling schedule of the road and dedicate more time to his two young children at home.
While the music scene often demands total commitment, Peters expressed gratitude for his time within the vibrant community of punk and hardcore. “It’s time for me to hang up the touring life and step down as the touring drummer of Cancer Bats,” he shared on social media. “I am so fortunate to be a part of this beautiful worldwide community we call punk and hardcore. But I have two young kids at home that I need to be home for.”
Despite stepping away from the stage, Peters is not leaving the fold entirely. He remains deeply embedded in the world of Cancer Bats, choosing to transition into a crucial behind-the-scenes role. He will continue to manage the band and act as their North American booking agent, ensuring the creative and logistical pulse of the group continues to beat.
Furthermore, Peters will remain involved in the creative output, continuing his work on writing and recording, ensuring his involvement in the band’s sound continues long after his touring tenure concludes. This focus allows him to nurture his creative passions while embracing his new role as a dedicated father.
To ensure the momentum of the band carries forward, Peters will be joined by Ian Romano, who will take over the drumming duties on the road. Romano brings a dynamic background, having played in several influential acts including Daniel Romano’s Outfit, Pig Pen, Career Suicide, and Corrosives, promising an exciting continuation of the Cancer Bats sound.
Peters’ journey with Cancer Bats began in 2004, when the group was founded by Liam Cormier, Scott Middleton, Andrew McCracken, and Joel Bath. Peters was instrumental in shaping the sound and presence of the band, contributing to all their releases, including their eighth studio LP, Give Me Dirt.
This transition marks a fitting conclusion to a chapter filled with high-energy performances and creative collaboration, demonstrating that even in the intense world of hardcore music, life outside the spotlight remains the ultimate priority.
