Donita Sparks Reflects on L7’s Journey as They Say Goodbye

The music world is currently holding its breath for the final chapter of a legendary sound. Singer-guitarist Donita Sparks has been reflecting on L7—the chaotic, brilliant, and often defiant journey of the quartet—as they prepare for their farewell run, The Last Hurrah Tour, set to begin in October.

In early July, Sparks shared the history of the band, laughing and sometimes weeping over the years of setbacks, record successes, and the unexpected second life that began when the classic lineup reunited.

But the reflection took a sudden, heartbreaking turn when she shared some difficult news. During her animated talk about the tour, Sparks revealed that the bassist, Jennifer Finch, would not be joining them on the road. Finch had recently faced severe health challenges, and her cancer treatment had suffered a major setback.

“She’s not well at all, and she won’t be joining us for this tour,” Sparks stated, her voice cracking with emotion. “We’re hopeful that something can happen to continue next year, but very, very soon there’s going to be an announcement about her health and there’s going to be a GoFundMe.”

Weeks later, the worst news arrived: Jennifer Finch passed away from brain cancer at the age of 59. The outpouring of support from the music community was immediate and massive. The GoFundMe campaign raised roughly $500,000 for her care, with musicians and supporters globally donating large sums in tribute to both Finch and the L7 legacy.

For Sparks and her bandmates, the loss was profound. “We’ve just been a band that’s been around a long time,” she reflected. “We’re kind of a band that has done a lot for not having a lot.” The tragedy served as a stark reminder of the fleeting nature of life, prompting a reflection on the enduring power of their music.

This experience brought up memories of other rock icons. Sparks recalled the passing of figures like Joey Ramone and Johnny Ramone, noting a similar wave of grief, only without the modern amplification of social media.

L7’s history is a chronicle of musical rebellion. Formed by Donita Sparks and Jennifer Finch, the band crystallized a hard-rock sound fueled by punk’s ethos. They gained traction by embracing an attitude of musical freedom, drawing inspiration from the wide spectrum of punk voices—from Patti Smith to the Ramones—and injecting their own political viewpoints into the sound.

Their early work, including the debut album and the EP Smell the Magic, captured this raw energy. They signed to Slash Records and navigated the complexities of the music industry, facing creative pressures while building a sound that was equal parts catchy and heavy.

As the band pursued their sound, they became vocal advocates, founding Rock for Choice to promote pro-choice benefits. Their music, and their defiant spirit, resonated deeply, inspiring the next generation of female rockers. Even during the recording of their acclaimed album Hungry for Stink, the band found themselves immersed in the world of high-stakes studio sessions, a period that ultimately led to the band’s dissolution.

Despite the eventual end of the group, the spirit of L7 lives on. Years later, Donita Sparks sought to reunite with her former bandmates, and the dream was realized. Fourteen years after their split, the classic quartet finally reunited, releasing their album Scatter the Rats. The reunion is a testament to the power of shared memories and a beautiful, unbreakable bond forged in rock and roll.
