Don Toliver: Drake collaborations were everything he wanted

Don Toliver is currently riding a wave of massive success, having cemented a banner year marked by critical acclaim and major milestones. Beyond charting high on the Billboard 200, the Houston native delivered an arena-sized tour and has recently added some high-profile collaborations to his impressive resume, bringing him even closer to the mainstream spotlight.

A major highlight of this period has been his latest partnerships with the titan of hip-hop, Drake. Toliver teamed up with Drizzy on tracks like “Cold Shoulder” and “Solar Eclipse.” The latter collaboration is particularly notable, as it interpolates a classic, taking the spirit of Ella Langley’s record-breaking smash “Choosin’ Texas” and infusing it with new energy.

These joint efforts landed on Drake’s HABIBTI (FOMO) deluxe compilation, giving the tracks significant exposure within the hip-hop world. The synergy between the artists clearly resonated, with Toliver reflecting on the moment in a recent interview, finding immense joy in the collaboration. He described the experience as “just really everything I could possibly ever want,” noting that the track “Solar Eclipse” perfectly captured the feeling of the partnership.

This successful run was built on a foundation of solid releases; Toliver’s album OCTANE kicked off the year in January and quickly claimed a spot on the Billboard 200. The album featured eighteen tracks that charted on the Hot 100, alongside his widely popular collaboration with Yeat on “Griddle.”

The momentum continued with the OCTANE World Tour, which saw Toliver take his sound to arenas across North America. The connection to the hip-hop scene was further highlighted when Drake made a special appearance at Toliver’s Toronto tour in August, performing several ICEMAN cuts live, showcasing the deep musical rapport between the artists.

As Don Toliver continues to build upon this success, attention is now turning to his next project, NITROUS, signaling that the journey of sonic evolution is far from over for the artist.
