DIIV’s ‘ZIRP!’: Pop meets politics on their most adventurous record

When the Los Angeles-based quartet DIIV stepped into more overtly political territory, they made a splash. Their previous release, ‘Frog In Boiling Water’, was wrapped in a deliberately chaotic package, most notably with a hoax appearance on Saturday Night Live. There, they were introduced by Fred Durst amidst a website full of conspiracy theories and a live show punctuated by spoof announcements suggesting a “creative partnership” with ExxonMobil. This tongue-in-cheek spectacle brilliantly masked a deep-seated anti-capitalist anger beneath the surface of their murky, lyrically opaque songs.

But the band had a mission beyond the joke. They carried this subversive approach into their fifth album, ‘ZIRP!’, refracting the dystopian state of modern America through the lens of their lightest, poppiest sound yet. This shift wasn’t just musical; it was a deliberate embrace of accessibility, focusing on hooks and melody in tracks like ‘The Fountain’ and ‘Dare Me’. Producer A.G. Cook expertly steered this direction, successfully preserving the essence of DIIV’s reputation as one of the generation’s most compelling live acts.

While the sonic landscape brightened, the lyrical fire remained intensely focused. ‘ZIRP!’ tackles the core of systemic issues, taking the title from the acronym for the US economic lever (zero interest rate policy) that fueled the rise of giants like Spotify and Uber, all at the expense of the working class. Tracks such as ‘Evangelizer’ and ‘Trillions’ offer pointed critiques of spiralling greed and the dark reality of corporate power, referencing everything from “Palantir-Pfizer collab pills” to the manipulation of “BlackRock master keys.”

It is exhilarating to witness DIIV putting their message squarely where it belongs. They have managed the thrilling feat of making their biggest sonic shift simultaneously with writing their most avowedly political record. Crucially, ‘ZIRP!’ is far from nihilistic. Beneath the surface, frontman Zachary Cole Smith is offering solutions to our late-capitalist hellscape, finding hope rooted in community and togetherness. This optimism seems to stem from recent personal experiences; following a catastrophe in the Los Angeles area, Smith and his bandmates appear to have rediscovered purpose by focusing on rebuilding their community.

The album is ambitious, unflinching, and ultimately hopeful. DIIV demonstrates that the most compelling art is often found at the intersection of raw emotion and thoughtful commentary, proving that the path to change can be found within the rhythm of the melody.

‘ZIRP!’ was released on October 30, 2026, under the Fantasy Recordings label.
