DIIV drops ‘The Fountain’ announcing album ZIRP! and tour dates

Shoegaze titans DIIV have dropped a new single, The Fountain, setting the stage for their highly anticipated new album, ZIRP!. This release isn’t just a collection of songs; it’s the sound of an intensely realized creative journey.

The new record, set for release on October 30 via Fantasy Recordings, draws inspiration from themes that feel acutely contemporary: societal breakdown, the complexities of streaming culture, and the endless cycle of digital existence. The resulting album is a sonic mantra that captures a utopian yet dystopian mood.

Behind the creation of ZIRP! was producer A.G. Cook, known for his work with artists like Charli XCX and Caroline Polachek. Cook stepped away from the traditional method of remixing demos, opting instead to obsess over the band’s live sound. He insisted on recording live drums before most tracks were complete and spent significant time crafting intricate guitar parts using specific pedals, consciously minimizing reliance on computer-based arrangements.

This hands-on approach allowed DIIV to push themselves into uncharted musical territory. Cook described the process as shifting from simply rebuilding demos to forging a completely new concept for the band. For him, the goal was to harness the raw energy of live performance and transform it into something truly distinctive.

The tracklist for ZIRP! features a potent array of material, including The Fountain, Kid, When The Glow Came For Us, and Underground. These tracks collectively explore the intense emotional landscapes the band is navigating.

The creative process itself was reportedly fraught with tension. Band members have spoken about the difficulty of establishing new guidelines for their sound, noting that moving toward an exploded approach created unexpected friction and resentments during the recording phase. Frontman Zachary Cole Smith reflected on the pressure: “It’s daunting. You make it on spec, like, ‘I hope people like this,’ and you kind of put all your eggs in that basket,” he shared.

DIIV’s previous work, Frog In Boiling Water, had earned a three-star review for its impressionistic charm. Now, with ZIRP!, the group is embarking on an ambitious tour designed to bring this evolving sound to wider audiences.

The band will be taking their new material across the globe later this year, supporting acts like Interpol and Basement. They are scheduled to kick off their US dates with headline performances at The Meadows in Brooklyn on September 29th, followed by stops in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Toronto, and Chicago in October. European dates will include appearances at the Pitchfork Music Festival in Paris and London, as well as the Sonic City Festival in Belgium.

The full range of ZIRP! is available to stream now, and tickets for their tour are available through various platforms.
