Dakota Johnson wants Wall of Death for Turnstile SNL promo
Dakota Johnson Ready to Mosh Like It’s 1999 on SNL
The star of Fifty Shades is back on the stage, bringing her signature energy to Saturday Night Live this weekend. But this time, Dakota Johnson isn’t just bringing herself; she’s bringing a dose of hardcore chaos, as she promotes the two-time Grammy Award-winning band Turnstile.
Johnson teams up with five-piece Baltimore hardcore group and comedian Ben Marshall for a playful new promotion. The goal? To show that she is ready to go hard with the rock legends, and in the promo, she certainly leaves no doubt about her enthusiasm for the music.
The dynamic between Johnson and Marshall is as chaotic as the music they are promoting. In one take, Johnson stares down the camera, ready to celebrate the performance by forming a wall of death. Marshall, however, has a more practical concern: he insists he isn’t allowed to mosh, citing a general inability to manage his center of gravity—a shared problem, he joked, with Ikea lamps.
Turnstile is a band that injects some real mayhem into the broadcast. Johnson admits that the group’s performance on SNL is famously wild, remarking that they “completely trashed the set” and threw things around. The bandmates, including Brendan Yates, Franz Lyons, Pat McCrory, Daniel Fang, and Meg Mills, offered sheepish looks, acknowledging the beautiful mess they created.
In another scene, the interaction shifts to awkward camaraderie. Marshall gives the rockers a shoutout for their Grammy success, leading to some genuinely endearing moments of shared synchronicity. Johnson noted the band’s uncanny ability to speak in unison, admitting that it was “weird,” but ultimately, it was true.
Despite the playful antics, the focus ultimately rests on the remarkable achievements of Turnstile. The band has proven their mettle by converting two of their four Grammy nominations at the 68th Grammy Awards, securing wins for best rock album for Never Enough and best metal performance for the track “Birds.”
This latest appearance on SNL, where Johnson is promoting Turnstile, comes as she continues to build momentum on screen. She is also actively promoting Verity, the film adaptation of the Colleen Hoover novel. Johnson recently also co-starred in Taylor Swift’s “Patient Zero” music video, which premiered at the MTV Video Music Awards.
Fans can catch the latest promotion and watch the newest episode of SNL on Saturday, October 3 at 11:30 p.m. ET on NBC and Peacock.
