Conor Oberst casts Phoebe Bridgers for short film

This short film is a fascinating journey, set during a cold night where a pianist attempts to master the notoriously complex chords of Bach’s Invention 13. The experience was further enriched by a unique collaboration with instrumentalist Shawn Foree, grounding the visual story in musical depth.
Adding another layer of depth to the narrative is the involvement of Phoebe Bridgers, who provided the voiceover for the film. Bridgers is already making waves as she prepares to make her acting debut in Lance Oppenheim’s Primetime, making this collaboration a delightful convergence of musical and acting talent.
The production of Invention 13 was executed with a charmingly tactile approach. Shot on Super 16mm film in January 2026 in Omaha, Nebraska, the filmmakers utilized practical effects and hand-drawn animation to bring the pianist’s struggle to life with a tangible, artistic flair.
The film’s score was provided by Nathaniel Walcott, a fellow member of the acclaimed band Bright Eyes, lending an emotional resonance that perfectly complements the visuals. The supporting cast is equally compelling, including Emory Cohen, Olivia Howard, and pro skater Nelly Morville.
Invention 13 is set to premiere at Los Angeles’s Beyond Fest on September 26. This special screening will be paired with the classic 1977 Japanese horror film House, promising an eclectic and engaging cinematic experience for audiences.
